AUNG SAN SUU KYI - AN ICON OF HER TIME AND SHE IS STILL ALIVE

While Aung San Suu Kyi is under house arrest, none of us are free. While the good people of Burma are enslaved by the fascist regime, none of us are free. While, even as we sit here together now, men, women and children are being systematically dispossessed and abused, none of us are free. Because it's happening Now. This minute. To you and to me through them. While they suffer, our freedom is only the illusion we allow ourselves by turning away, by allowing it to continue, by conveniently believing we can do nothing.

We hope one day Aung San Suu Kyi will be free, we are collecting messages for her and we will pass them on when she is released:

Aung San Suu Kyi means to Burma what Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela mean to the world. She is the leader of the democracy movement in Burma, and the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her only crime - to call for democracy and for the ruling military junta to recognise the will of the people of Burma...

She is referred to as the Nelson Mandela of Burma
She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991
She is a symbol of hope to the Burmese People
She is a mother to a family she never sees
She is a widow; her husband Michael Aris, an English man, died while she was under house arrest.
She is the elected leader of the NLD party, they won over 82% of seats in parliament during elections in 1990.
She is under House Arrest, she is cut off from the world and her people; her phone line is cut, her post is intercepted.
